Co-owner cost split calculator
Split a bill between co-owners by stake, to the cent, so the shares always add up.
Stakes total 100.00%
Owner A (33.34%)
$333.40
Owner B (33.33%)
$333.30
Owner C (33.33%)
$333.30
Total of shares
$1,000.00
Largest-remainder rounding: everyone is rounded down to the cent, then leftover cents go to the largest fractions, so shares always add up to the total.
The missing-cent problem
Split $1,000 three ways at 33.34%, 33.33% and 33.33% and simple rounding gives $333.40 + $333.30 + $333.30 = $1,000.00. But with less tidy numbers, rounding each share separately often leaves the total a cent or two off. Over hundreds of invoices, partners' records drift apart.
Largest-remainder rounding fixes this: round every share down, then hand out the leftover cents one at a time to the shares with the biggest fractions. The total always matches.
Do stakes have to be whole numbers?
No. Use up to two decimals, as long as they add up to 100%.
